Welcome to Malak Jewelers’ Flashback Friday! Each Friday, we will feature a piece or set of jewelry from our Estate Jewelry collection!

This week, we're continuing the ruby love -- with a twist! We're showcasing this dazzling rainbow necklace, which features rubies, sapphires, and emeralds!

Radiant Ruby

The radiant ruby is the beautiful birthstone for July! This month we're really feeling the ruby love, and we're not alone! Rubies are some of the most desired gemstones to have. This is a combination of their natural beauty and their rarity. Rubies are among the rarest gemstones to find. Though it is possible to synthesize rubies, natural rubies are far more unique!

Rubies are a variant of the mineral corundum. Sapphires are also corundum. What differentiates a ruby from a sapphire? It all comes down to color. Red corundum is ruby, and anything else is a sapphire! Red corundum is rarer than the other colors, so sapphires are easier to find than rubies. The red coloring comes from traces of chromium in the corundum. (Side note: chromium also colors emeralds!)

Corundum is one of the hardest minerals out there. It's second only to diamond in terms of hardness. Coming in at a 9 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, both rubies and sapphires are durable stones. They make excellent choices for jewelry, because they are less likely to be damaged!

Rubies come from several different sources. The most productive is Southeast Asia. Myanmar produces Burmese rubies, known for their "pigeon blood" red coloring. These rubies are the most sought after. Other sources for rubies are Africa, Australia, and even the United States! North Carolina is a minor producer of rubies -- gotta love our state!

The Necklace

This necklace is a real show-stopper! It features seven strands of beautifully colored stones. Because this necklace combines rubies, emeralds, and sapphires, it's a veritable bounty of corundum and chromium! It's fun that these similar stones are being used together.

The necklace is a combination of rubies, emeralds, and multiple colors of sapphire. This creates a rainbow effect, as the stones alternate in color. There is a rotation of red to yellow to blue to green, then it starts back up with red! Each color features varying degrees of saturation, meaning that the stones vary from pale and nearly clear to vivid and bold.

The stones are small individually, but the overall effect is a substantial feel as there are many, many small stones! In fact, the total carat weight for the necklace as a whole is 2.56 carats! The stones are set on cord, so as to not distract from the real feature: the stones!

This necklace is sure to catch any eye. With the stunning variety of colors, it will match any and everything. If you're looking for a cheery, beautiful, statement piece, look no further! This is definitely the necklace for you.
