How to Care for Your Diamonds at Home

Diamonds are some of the most precious stones in the world. They exhibit unmatched sparkle and shine. In order to keep the radiance of your diamond, it is important to take care of your diamond.

One of the most important steps in taking care of your diamond is to have it professionally cleaned at least once a year. The jewelry store where you purchased your diamond has a professional jewelry cleaner that carefully removes all dirt and grease from your diamond. You should take your diamond at least once a year to the store to have it professionally cleaned.

In addition to having your diamond professionally cleaned, you must take good home care of your diamond. Cleaning your diamond once a year is not enough to keep it sparkling. Every day your hands go through a lot and with it so does your diamond. It is important to regularly clean your diamond at home.

Many diamond owners are skeptical of home remedies. A lot of chemicals that are advertised as good home diamond cleaners will actually end of damaging your diamond jewelry. Here are three remedies you can do at home to safely restore your diamonds remarkable beauty.

1. Mild Detergent

Mix a mild detergent with warm water in a small bowl or cup. Dip the diamonds in the mixture. Use a soft brush (a soft toothbrush or eyebrow brush will work) and gently brush the diamonds to dislodge dust or dirt under the setting. Rinse the diamond with warm water. Use a strainer to make sure it does not fall into the drain. Pat dry with a hand towel.

2. Ammonia

In a small bowl or cup, mix ammonia with cold water. Fully immerse the diamond in the mixture for 30 minutes. Be careful as to not leave the diamond in the mixture for longer than thirty minutes, this may cause damage to the piece. After the 30 minutes, let the jewelery air dry. Note: only use this home remedy on diamonds. Ammonia may damage other stones.

3. Brand-Name Jewelry Cleaner

Most jewelry stores, and some generic grocery stores, sell brand-name jewelry cleaners. These are tested and proven to safely clean your diamonds. Follow the directions on the cleaner exactly. Only use this cleaner on stones that are listed as safe to use.

Note: Do not let your diamond come into contact with any chlorine bleach or other harmful chemicals that can damage the setting.
